US National Parks

Yellowstone became the world's first national park in 1872, 'dedicated and set apart as a public park or pleasuring-ground for the benefit and enjoyment of the people.' The National Park Service followed in 1916 under the Organic Act, with its famous dual mandate: conserve the scenery and leave it unimpaired, while providing for its enjoyment.
